Cohousing

Imagine a living arrangement in which multiple, individually owned housing units (usually 20-30) are oriented around a common open area and a common house — a place where community is a way of life. Imagine residents who actively cooperate in planning the project with one goal in mind — to recreate an old-fashioned neighborhood that supports friendly cooperation, socialization, and mutual support. Imagine senior cohousing.

Senior Cohousing in Denmark: An Inside Look We have had enough general discussions. Let’s take a closer look at some real places and the people who live in them. The following case studies give a small sampling of the variety of senior cohousing applications. We begin with a close look at one community’s planning process and how they were able to design a community with strong roots in fertile soil.

Design Thinking

Thomas Edison created the electric lightbulb and then wrapped an entire industry around it. The lightbulb is most often thought of as his signature invention, but Edison understood that the bulb was little more than a parlor trick without a system of electric power generation and transmission to make it truly useful. So he created that, too.  Thus Edison’s genius lay in his ability to conceive of a fully developed marketplace, not simply a discrete device. He was able to envision how people would want to use what he made, and he engineered toward that insight. He wasn’t always prescient (he originally believed the phonograph would be used mainly as a business machine for recording and replaying dictation), but he invariably gave great consideration to users’ needs and preferences. Edison’s approach was an early example of what is now called “design thinking” a methodology that imbues the full spectrum of innovation activities with a human-centered design ethos. By this I mean that innovation is powered by a thorough understanding, through direct observation, of what people want and need in their lives and what they like or dislike about the way particular products are made, packaged, marketed, sold, and supported.

THE LEGACY OF SUBURBIA

“Suburbia is more than a collection of residential buildings; it expresses values so deeply embedded in bourgeois cultures that it might also be called bourgeois utopia... From its origins the suburban works of leisure family life and union with nature was based on the principle of exclusion.“ (Robert Fishman, The Rise and Fall of Bourgeois Utopia) Between the various narratives to trace suburbias origins probably the attempt to locate it in the 18th century development of big British cities is the most convincing. Whereas the urban ecology was still shaped by the identity of work and home in the bourgeois townhouse, which was open to the city, the weekend villa became the forerunner for the suburbia.

Bauhaus

The new Bauhaus Kolleg will take Levittown, the role model of American suburbia, and the fate of its latest projects as the starting point of a comparative international study on the economic, social, ecological and cultural implications of a global suburbia. The dramatic fallout of the global financial crisis of 2008 can be seen the clearest in the suburbias. Levitt & Sons’ company history can be read as only one example amongst many for the disastrous development of the global financial economy: since the 1980s a transformation has set in, away from investing in immobile capital, i.e. land, and towards investing in liquid assets that can be transferred across national borders in the form of funds and portfolios. Today, ownership has been decoupled to a hitherto unknown extent from the location of the assets. A new international ‘financial market architecture’ in the form of particular investment structures has fostered this development. Residential resorts and gated communities constructed by international developers are the building sites of this global financial market architecture.
