Barcelona Gaudí Architecture

On this page you'll find an introduction to Barcelona Gaudí Architecture and find out why his work is so important in Barcelona.

Gaudí's work is admired by architects around the World as being one of the most unique and distinctive architectural styles. His work has greatly influenced the face of Barcelona Architecture and you will see Gaudí's work all over the city. Antoni Gaudí was born in Reus in 1852 and received his Architectural degree in 1878. From the very beginning his designs were different from those of his contemporaries. Gaudí's work was greatly influenced by forms of nature and this is reflected by the use of curved construction stones, twisted iron sculptures, and organic-like forms which are traits of Gaudí's Barcelona architecture.

Gaudí also adorned many of his buildings with coloured tiles arranged in mosaic patterns. This added another important dimension to his buildings which is so often overlooked by architects - the use of colour. The combination of original design, interesting shaped stonework, and vibrant colours in Gaudí's work give the viewer a truly breathtaking visual experience. To give you an outline of his style we have prepared three separate pages reviewing a selection of Barcelona Gaudí's work

THE LEGACY OF SUBURBIA

“Suburbia is more than a collection of residential buildings; it expresses values so deeply embedded in bourgeois cultures that it might also be called bourgeois utopia... From its origins the suburban works of leisure family life and union with nature was based on the principle of exclusion.“ (Robert Fishman, The Rise and Fall of Bourgeois Utopia) Between the various narratives to trace suburbias origins probably the attempt to locate it in the 18th century development of big British cities is the most convincing. Whereas the urban ecology was still shaped by the identity of work and home in the bourgeois townhouse, which was open to the city, the weekend villa became the forerunner for the suburbia.

DESSAU - GERMANY

Bauhaus

The new Bauhaus Kolleg will take Levittown, the role model of American suburbia, and the fate of its latest projects as the starting point of a comparative international study on the economic, social, ecological and cultural implications of a global suburbia. The dramatic fallout of the global financial crisis of 2008 can be seen the clearest in the suburbias. Levitt & Sons’ company history can be read as only one example amongst many for the disastrous development of the global financial economy: since the 1980s a transformation has set in, away from investing in immobile capital, i.e. land, and towards investing in liquid assets that can be transferred across national borders in the form of funds and portfolios. Today, ownership has been decoupled to a hitherto unknown extent from the location of the assets. A new international ‘financial market architecture’ in the form of particular investment structures has fostered this development. Residential resorts and gated communities constructed by international developers are the building sites of this global financial market architecture.
